FAQ

Do you have age restrictions for boarding?

Yes. We require that puppies be at least 4 months old and fully vaccinated. Additionally, please speak to us about concerns and arrangements for boarding geriatric pets

What vaccinations do you require? What documentation do I need?

Our canine guests must be vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus (this may be a combination vaccine that will immunize against other viruses, too) rabies and bordatella (kennel cough).

We require our feline guests to be vaccinated against FHLV and rabies.

Because your veterinarian is the expert on your pet’s health, we ask that you provide us with written confirmation from your vet that your pet’s vaccinations are current. Your vet may fax this to us at 480-854-6963.

What about flea and tick treatment?

Each guest is given a flea and tick preventative treatment upon arrival unless we are provided with a record of treatment having been received within the past 30 days.

How else can I prepare my pet for the boarding experience?

Our staff at Bark Avenue Pet Resort is caring and kind and most pets adjust quickly and happily to our routine.
The best psychological preparation of a pet for boarding is also the best way to help your pet develop a healthy personality – let him get used to meeting new people and having a variety of experiences. This socialization can be accomplished from training classes, including puppy kindergarten, spending some time at daycare and playcare, and visits to the vet and groomer. And, of course, each positive boarding experience builds your pet’s confidence for each return visit!

Do you have indoor/outdoor kennels?

No. The extreme temperatures in Arizona are unsafe for most pets to be in for extended periods of time, especially unsupervised. Each canine guest has a comfortable, climate-controlled room. Each is taken out to a grassy paddock twice daily for supervised exercise while his or her room is being cleaned and disinfected. This allows our trained staff to observe each guest for signs of stress or illness. Additional “potty breaks” are available, as well as additional playtimes that can be scheduled during check-in.

What if my pet becomes ill while boarding?

At check-in, we request contact information for each guest’s regular vet. In case of illness, we will first try that vet first. If for any reason your vet is unavailable, we will use the Emergency Animal Clinic in Mesa

How often do you feed your guests? What do you feed? May I bring my own food?

We try to keep our guests on the same feeding schedule they enjoy at home. We generally feed morning and late afternoon, but we will gladly accommodate up to three feedings per day. We feed California Natural Chicken and Rice for dogs, and Natural Choice Chicken and Rice for cats. If you’d like to bring your pet’s own food, we only ask that it be bagged into the correct portions for each meal and clearly marked.

Will you be sure my pet gets enough water?

Our staff monitors the water consumption of each of our guests, checking and refreshing so that your pet will have fresh water available constantly throughout his stay.

Can my pets stay together in one room?

Yes, guests from the same family and of the same species (canine or feline) can share a room at a discounted rate for the additional pet. We can also open adjoining rooms to accommodate your pet family, in which case each room will be charged at the normal rate.

How big are the dog rooms?

Room sizes are:
small dogs – 4’ X 4’
medium dogs – 4’ X 6’
large dogs – 4’ X 8’

Dog Suites are 8’ X 7’

Is Bark Avenue Pet Resort air conditioned?

Yes! It’s a fact that in Arizona , evaporative coolers just don’t do the job well enough. We have separate air conditioners and ventilation systems for the separate zones of our facility, so that our guests are comfortable at any time of the year.

Tell me about the dog suites.

We have two types of suite. They both measure 8x7 and are secluded from the rest of the kennel. You have the option of reserving a suite with or without a tv, and both come complete with a cot for your pets ultimate comfort and relaxation.

Do you offer group playtimes?

Only guests from the same family play together at Bark Avenue Pet Resort. We know that some facilities offer group play among dogs who are strangers to each other, but that is ill-advised. Some dogs, when placed in such a situation, will become overly rambunctious while others, perhaps less out-going by nature, will be intimidated or defensive. This can lead to interaction which is potentially dangerous.
We want all of our guests to have a positive, safe experience at Bark Avenue . Our pet & play and swim times are individually tailored to each guest’s needs and offer one-to-one contact with a staff member.

What accommodations do you offer for cats?

We have 3 types of cat rooms to meet the individual needs of your cat. We have cat suites available with or without a tv and window that faces our lobby. Both are multi level rooms, and large enough for multiple cats from the same family to share. We also offer indoor/outdoor cat cottages that allow your cat to go outdoors during our business hours for a little sunbathing and birdwatching, while still keeping him safely contained on his personal screened in patio. Of course all types of cat rooms come standard with plenty of litter box changes.

How far in advance should I make my reservations? Do you require a deposit?

To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you make your reservation as far in advance as possible, especially for the busy summer and holiday times. We do book up quickly! No deposit is necessary, but we do ask that, if your plans should change, you cancel promptly as a courtesy to those who may be on our waiting list.

Will you give my pet his medications?

Yes, we will administer medications or vitamins for a small additional charge. Please be sure any medications are clearly marked with dosage and frequency.

Should I bring my dog’s toys and bedding?

You may bring toys, so long as they are larger than a tennis ball and not absorbent. Please mark them with your name so that we can do our best to return them.
Please do not bring bedding. We provide fleece bedding at night that is changed and laundered daily. You may also opt for a cot for your dog.

Can my pet catch an illness from being boarded?

Yes. Although we take every precaution to protect your pet from being exposed to disease while they are at Bark Avenue , they can contract an airborne illness from another pet.
By requiring current vaccinations, maintaining our state of the art ventilation systems, and practicing meticulous sanitation in our outdoor areas and twice-daily cleaning and disinfecting of indoor areas, we endeavor to minimize the risk. Additionally, our staff is trained to observe your pet and recognize early signs of common illnesses. We have isolation areas where guests displaying symptoms of illness are comfortably and safely housed, and vets on call 24 hours per day.
Think sending your child to school: you may have seen to it that he has received that season’s flu vaccine, takes his vitamins, and has proper nutrition and rest. Despite your best efforts he still may contract a cold or flu, possibly a strain that was not included in the vaccine.

What to Expect When Your Pet Returns Home After Boarding

Your pet will undoubtedly be happy to see you after your trip. Following a few simple steps will help ease the transition back to home life.
*Overexcitement may make a pet pant a lot and act thirsty. He is probably not really thirsty, and had plenty of water available at the boarding facility. Give him a few ice cubes to tide him over until he settles down.
*Food: ditto. But please be aware that excessive drinking and eating may lead to digestive upsets and bloating. Do not feed your pet for at least three hours after coming home from the kennel, and then limit the food and water you provide until he has settled back into home life.
*Walk your pet upon arrival or allow access to a yard area. Excitement may also cause a change in
